The Caves of Castellana (26 km away)

The caves extend for several kilometers and cross the towns of Cisternino, Polignano a Mare and Alberobello.

Speleologists estimate their age at 90 million years. At that time, Puglia was covered by an ancient sea with large colonies of mollusks and marine plants.

25 million years later, a limestone layer began to form the Apulia region. Intense rainfall traced an underground river and melted the limestone layers, creating more and more abundant corridors.
2.5 million years ago, the rainwater that infiltrated gradually caused the formation of stalactites and stalagmites.

On January 23, 1938, the geologist Franco Anelli discovered the Castellana caves. He then explored them with Vito Materrese.
